 Panhala Fort

Panhala fort is triangular in shape. It is seven kilometers in perimeter with a steep slope beneath. The climate is cool all through the year. It overflows with tourists from October to June. In the rainy season, strong winds blow, with sharp, stinging, slanting rains, rendering umbrellas quite useless. But there are many who find this experience quite irresistible! They don't need umbrellas or raincoats -- they have each other.

Panhala is also a beautiful paradigm of unity, where people of all religions live together in peace and harmony. The locals are simple and friendly and there are many hotels to suit every budget. The food offered varies from simple, everyday menus to continental dishes.

TEEN DARWAJA

The three massive gates called Teen Darwaja are made of huge black stones and lead. The architectural work is attractive. On the gates are inscriptions of two tigers with feathers, an elephant and Lord Ganesha. The construction of the consecutive doors had been done in a clever way in the olden days, to prevent easy access inside. The door-hinges were very powerful. At the corner of the courtyard is a small well, known as Vishnu Teerth. Here, the water level remains at a height of five feet all year through. Further up is pure and clean water surrounded by a completely dry abyss of about 200 feet.

Another main entrance, the Wagh Darwaja, stands to the north of the fort. It was built in a deliberate way in a valley so that the adversary ensnared within could not flee. There are watch towers on both sides and storage space for ammunition on the floor above. Steps have been erected on both, the inner as well as the outer sides.

The eastern entrance was once the Char Darwaja. The first gate was within two watch towers. A little further up was the second gate. To the east within was the third gate and on climbing up west, was the fourth small gate. Although nothing much remains of the original structure, the intricate art on the ramparts speaks highly of the majesty of the by-gone era.
